Men stand before the magistrates,
so dressed by lawyers they could pass
for actuaries out on dates.

They stare through motions and debates
about postponements; hours pass
without news. Mothers pray for sons,

sons who prefer their drugs and guns
to pregnant girlfriends. They all pass
like midnight buses on their runs.
